Refining gold means that the gold is restored to its purest state. This means the refined gold will be free from impurities. There are several methods used for refining gold and precious metals today. The two main methods of gold refining are the Wohlwill process or the Miller process. The Wohlwill process was developed in 1875 and produces gold to a 99.99% purity. This is an electrochemical process that produces very high quality gold and precious metals. The Miller process is a chemical process and is most commonly used in the United States because it is a faster method that produces gold to a 99.95% purity. Other less common methods include parting and inquartation, cuppelation or the dissolution of the gold in aegis regia. These methods produce a lower purity of gold (99.40%-99.70%) that most retailers find substandard. It's best to use electrolytic refining if you want a higher purity! The first step in any refining process is an evaluation of the metal for gold content. Our expert analysts individually test and weigh your items to determine their highest cash price. Once we have determined this, we write you a check for the value of your gold and jewelry items. Let’s look more closely at the Miller process.
The Miller process is one of the most used in refining gold and other precious metals. In this process the metal is melted in an induction furnace. Chlorine gas is introduced into the molten raw gold through a rotating lance in a very precise and controlled way so that no chlorine gas escapes. By-metals such as silver, platinum and copper are removed into the slag as molten chlorides which float on top of the melted gold. This process takes 2-4 hours. The slag is then poured off and slowly cooled. The remaining gold particles are poured through a ceramic filter and washed. The refined gold and precious metals are then sold to retailers to make new jewelry.
